My Melody’s Whirly Smoothie | My Melody & Kuromi

In need of a quick natural immune boost? Thankfully My Melody has provided one in her Netflix series with fellow Sanrio friend, Kuromi. My recreation of this My Melody smoothie – named the “whirly smoothie” – is all natural, just as the character envisioned and served in her very own cake shop. Let’s get blending.

The Drink

I did say I was considering doing a series of My Melody & Kuromi recreation recipes in my cloud cupcakes post, right?

Well, a lovely reader got in touch and requested that I make the smoothie that My Melody makes for her cake shop customers. Request acknowledged and accepted, friend!

As it happens, My Melody herself listed most of the exact ingredients that she used in this immune-boosting smoothie. The only thing I added was a good glug of milk, just to bring the whole drink together.

All images are of two glasses containing a pale pink smoothie, topped with a slightly glittery white, green and pink meringue swirl each. Each glass is also adorned with a slice of orange on the edge. Props include pink flowers in a small pink vase; a white and yellow flower plushie, peach print pink oven gloves, a Hello Kitty hairbrush, Cinnamoroll material fan, and the fruit and veg that this My Melody smoothie contains.

The chilly seasons approach as I’m writing this post, so an immune-boosting smoothie recipe feels entirely appropriate, wouldn’t you say?

Whether you recreate the topping as well is entirely up to you; the smoothie is delicious either way – and full of natural goodness which is always a win.

As My Melody states and her friends concur, you can barely taste the celery in this My Melody smoothie, so don’t let its involvement put you off. It has a purpose: this vegetable is packed to the leaf with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, all of which have numerous health benefits.

Thanks to the celery and the fruit, this My Melody smoothie will do so much good for your body.

Plus the honey, which (as Eugene states in Wednesday) is “nature’s perfect food”.

Full of antioxidants, honey is also antibacterial and a natural antihistamine. It’s great for your skin; can help improve your gut health, and has anti-inflammatory qualities. Bees really do create liquid gold! We must protect them, friends.

As expected with all of the numnums in My Melody & Kuromi, this My Melody whirly smoothie is sweetly decorated.

To recreate the cute swirl on the top of this goblet of goodness (what I call all of my own smoothies), I made a meringue float to pipe on top of it. As I did with my The Notebook inspired drinks, I used aquafaba to create what is essentially a safe-to-consume raw meringue.

It’s so easy to do and floats on top of the liquid. The method is used for a number of cocktails, which are traditionally topped with raw egg white. I just prefer knowing the aquafaba doesn’t typically need heat introduced to it to be at its safest to eat.

Once whipped, it’s a case of adding pink and green to parts of the mixture and piping a nice swirl on each My Melody smoothie.

Finish with a slice of lemon or orange for a hit of vitamin C and a few sprays of edible glitter and you have yourself a true recreation!

Top Tips

  • My Melody notes all of the ingredients she uses in the base of her smoothie in the show except for some form of liquid to help bring the whole drink together. I opted to include milk in my recreation because that’s my go-to for a smoothie. Though I used almond milk in mine, you are welcome to use your preferred milk. An yummy alternative to milk could be coconut water for some extra electrolytes.
  • Rather than dictating how much honey to put in, I recommend adding enough to achieve your desired level of sweetness. Whilst honey won’t sweeten like sugar or sweeteners do, it doesn’t take much to give it a little natural sweetness. Start with about 1 tbsp, taste, and adjust from there. I recommend no more than 3 tbsp for the entire mixture (serves 2).
  • Smoothies are super easy to make and can be made using a hand blender, standing blender, or food processor. So long as you have something that can pulverise the ingredients until smooth, you’re good to go. I used a hand blender because it’s what I use regularly to make smoothies, but you are welcome to use whatever type of blending equipment you have.
  • This recipe calls for aquafaba to make the meringue float – purely because I feel better knowing it’s absolutely fine to eat raw. That being said, cocktails are often made with egg whites, so you can swap the aquafaba out for 1 large egg white if preferred.
  • This recipe makes two decent sized smoothies, but can be halved or doubled (or more!) to easily change the yield.

This My Melody smoothie is straight out of the adorable stop-motion animation My Melody & Kuromi. As My Melody notes in the show, this smoothie is an immune-boosting drink, perfect for the colder months ahead. It’s quick and easy to whip up and makes for a super cute drink for a My Melody & Kuromi watch party, or simply for yourself or a loved one. Enjoy!

Happy blending, happy drinking!

The Recipe

Ingredients

Whirly smoothies:

  • 1 banana
  • 1 apple
  • 1 kiwi
  • ½ celery stick
  • 8 – 10 small or medium sized strawberries
  • Honey to taste
  • Glug of milk of your choice

Toppings:

  • 3 tbsp aquafaba
  • 3 tbsp caster [superfine] sugar
  • Green food colouring  liquid
  • Pink food colouring  liquid
  • 1 lemon or small orange slice  halved, dried or fresh
  • Silver edible glitter  optional

Serves: 2

Preparation time: 15 minutes

Blending time: 2 minutes

Decorating time: 5 minutes

Method

My Melody’s whirly smoothie:

  1. Peel, wash and chop the fruit and celery into chunks and place into a large container.
  2. Using a food processor, blender, or hand blender, blend all of the ingredients until smooth.
  3. Add the honey 1 tbsp at a time and blend in. Add more to taste if desired.
  4. Pour in a good glug of milk and blend. If you prefer your smoothies to be thinner, add a little more milk until you reach your desired consistency.
  5. Pour the smoothie mixture evenly into two smoothie bowls or glasses. Refrigerate while you make your meringue topping.

Meringue topping:

  1. Using a standing or electric hand whisk, whip the aquafaba into soft peaks in a large jug or mixing bowl: until pale and frothy like cappuccino foam.
  2. Whilst still whisking, add the sugar 1 tbsp at a time, whisking in until fully incorporated, the meringue is white and glossy and stiff peaks are achieved (it can hold its shape).
  3. Separate the meringue mixture into three bowls: around 3 heaped tbsp for pink and another 3 tbsp for green. Add a few drops of green food colouring to one and a few drops of pink food colouring to another. Leave one colourless.
  4. Briefly whisk the green food colouring into the meringue mixture until an even colour is achieved. Clean the whisk and do the same for the pink.

Decoration:

  1. Carefully spoon the three different aquafaba meringue mixtures into a piping bag with an open star tip attached (if desired – otherwise just snip off a relatively large amount of the piping bag so your swirl can be thick) and pipe the trio of mixtures in a large swirl on the surface of each smoothie.
  2. Cut the lemon or orange slice in half if you haven’t already and make a small incision halfway up the centre of each half. Sit a slice on the edge of each glass/bowl.
  3. Spray each smoothie with silver edible glitter if using.
  4. Serve immediately with a red and white striped paper straw if desired. Otherwise chill in the fridge for no longer than a few hours otherwise you risk the meringue losing its shape.

These My Melody smoothies are just the ticket for a boost of vitamins, minerals, and fibre. They are quick and easy to whizz up, making them a great drink option for a My Melody & Kuromi themed party. These smoothies are best enjoyed immediately after making, but can be kept in the fridge uncovered for a 2+ hours before the meringue float potentially starts to lose its shape. Enjoy!

The TV Show

As I have already delved into the show in my first My Melody & Kuromi post, I will simply use this space to talk about the animation style.

I feel like felt is an underused material when it comes to stop-motion animation.

Filmmakers like Aardman Animations are known around the world for their clay creations, typically classics like Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, Chicken Run and Morph.

Clay is definitely the better known material for stop-motion animation and is highly regarded as such; it’s sturdy but malleable, changeable and reliable, all at the same time.

Yet, felt adds an entire dimension of cuteness to a project, as demonstrated so wonderfully by My Melody & Kuromi.

The pastel colour palette and adorable characters absolutely help, but the gentle textures of the felt (especially as clouds and meringue!) add an entirely different softness to the overall feel.

Which is kind of key with a story like My Melody & Kuromi – and when a reputation of undeniable cuteness that Sanrio has been building for decades is in the mix.

This style of animation makes for a highly whimsical feel.

The fluffiness of the felt is always visible which brings a real sense of comfort and calmness even when the general story is more chaotic.

A stop-motion animation made with felt is the animation equivalent of a comfort blanket, but for the eyes.

When it comes to comfort and cosiness, count me in. Especially this time of year.
