The Bake

I’m going to address it straight off the bat, friends. There is no actual baking needed for this Stranger Things watch party snack board.

I wanted it to be as easy and fuss-free as possible in the sense that you don’t need to make anything from scratch if you don’t want to, and you can adjust it to suit your personal tastes.

All images are of a Stranger Things watch party snack board with waffles, banana split, chocolate chip cookies, red laces, cola bottles, M'n'Ms, chocolate spread and strawberry demogorgon heads, and a whipped cream centre with "Stranger Things" written in whipped cream and M'n'M Christmas light bulbs.

There are absolutely elements that you can make yourself if you want to.

If you have a waffle maker, well, have at it and make your own waffles.

I don’t have my own waffle maker and (sadly) Eggo waffles are not an easily found numnum in the U.K., so I had to search for different ready-made waffles. Lots of brands and supermarkets do their own, thankfully.

You can also make the cookies yourself if you wish. My Percy Jackson and the Olympians inspired cookies are delicious and can be made for a Stranger Things watch party – just leave out the blue food colouring!

There are a good number of treats that make up my Stranger Things watch party snack spread.

Some obvious inclusions that were a must in my themed snack spread were the waffles and edible Christmas lights.

Then, there are treats that I chose with the specific purpose of paying homage to parts of the story. Namely, the banana split-style dessert section and the chocolate chip cookies in honour of Scoops Ahoy: the dessert place where Steve and Robin work, and where the kids go to get summer holiday treats.

If you like Chips Ahoy cookies and can get some for this snack spread, that’s even better. Scoops Ahoy – Chips Ahoy. You get it.

Plus, red laces that stand in as vines and tentacles sneaking in from the Upside Down, and chocolate spread with chopped strawberries and icing “teeth” that I used to recreate demogorgon heads.

I will say that the latter is not my own idea – lots of others have done this before, but it’s too good not to! I did however miss a slice of strawberry on each one: you need five slices to complete a demogorgon head. These things happen.

I aimed for a retro vibe with some of the sweets that I chose.

Red laces and cola bottles feel nostalgic, and the whole vibe of the show (besides sci-fi) is that of ‘80s nostalgia.

Plus, the toppings for the banana split are whipped cream, sprinkles, and mini Jazzies. ‘80s candy everywhere for this Stranger Things watch party snack board.

What you choose for your candy pieces is entirely up to you, but the more ‘80s nostalgia that surrounds them, the better.

Finally, the centrepiece of my Stranger Things watch party snack spread is a simple whipped cream design.

I had to include the Christmas lights somewhere, and this was the simplest way. It’s also super easy to do, and acts as the dip of the board, especially for the waffles and banana split.

I whipped the cream myself, but this is optional. As long as you can spread it a little so that you can pipe more cream on top, you’re good to go.

After spreading the base, tint the remaining cream with black food colouring and pipe the wires of the Christmas lights, as well as the letters. I piped “Stranger Things”, you can pipe a name or be really faithful to the story and do as much of the alphabet in order as you can.

Then use colourful candy like M’n’Ms for the light bulbs. Easy.

Top Tips

  • If ice cream is your thing, be sure to finish your Stranger Things watch party snack spread with a few scoops to go with the banana split and/or waffles. It ties back to Scoops Ahoy and goes great with warm waffles! Go ahead and buy your favourite, or use my Living inspired ice cream recipe for a super easy chemical-free homemade ice cream.
  • I piped “Stranger Things” under the edible Christmas lights centre section of my Stranger Things snack board, but you can write whatever you like. It could be your name, character’s names, the alphabet, or perhaps “Hellfire Club”.
  • This snack board is designed to be easy to put together and fuss-free. If you would like to make anything from scratch, go for it! There are links to my cookie and ice cream recipes above.
  • The more ‘80s nostalgia you can achieve through your candy choices, the better!

My Stranger Things watch party snack spread is just the ticket for all you Stranger Things fans that have a sweet tooth. The amount of snacks that you include is up to you and can be adapted to suit the number of people that you are catering for. Enjoy!

Happy snacking!

The TV Show

Stranger Things is definitely not a slow growth to success story. It was pretty much a hit from the get go… and for good reason.

This sci-fi sensation is led by a group of kids in the 1980s, who find themselves caught up in uncovering hidden government activities and battling against deadly supernatural forces.

A terrifying place known as the Upside Down leeches into their world through vines, tentacles, demogorgons and… Vecna – *shudder* – but resilience is strong with these kids.

Matt and Ross Duffer created Stranger Things, giving us a sci-fi show packed to the baseball cap brim with mystery and ‘80s nostalgia.

Leading the cast are some serious young talent in the forms of Millie Bobby Brown; Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo, Sadie Sink, and Noah Schnapp.

Joining them as siblings and older mates are Natalia Dyer; Charlie Heaton, and Joe Keery.

Each series brought in new faces, including Dacre Montgomery, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, and Joseph Quinn, who joined series regulars including the iconic Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Cara Buono, Joe Chrest, and more.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate Jamie Campbell Bower’s performance as Vecna? Truly terrifying.

Also… justice for Barb [Shannon Purser]. Still.

Stranger Things gives a lot for different demographics, which is an achievement in itself.

The sci-fi and supernatural theme is a core element of the story. The ‘80s nostalgia takes people back in time through pop culture and throwback efforts.

Adventure is found through well-developed characters that happen to be kids, and as a result, takes us back to our childhood in a really fun – if pretty scary – way.

I am READY for the final season… but, I’m also not ready… you know?
