The Bake
Like my Living inspired knickerbocker glories and my Studio Ghibli cookie dough soot sprites, this particular recipe doesn’t require any baking (just go with it).
If you’re planning on hosting your own dinner party for the living, you need dessert, right? Beetlejuice is quite the ride, so I figured a light sweet treat is the way to go for a Beetlejuice movie night.
Graveyards obviously play a significant role in the movie, particularly when Beetlejuice himself is concerned, so I wanted to get creative with this in mind. This concept also gives a decent amount of scope to customise the dessert based on your tastes.
As it’s October, my local supermarket was stocked up on Halloween themed sweets, which meant that I had plenty of choice to decorate my Beetlejuice movie night desserts!
Mousse is so incredibly easy and super quick to whip up, making it the ideal dessert for any movie night, including a Beetlejuice movie night.
It also only needs a handful of ingredients and an electric hand whisk to be whipped up.
To keep the mousse itself within theme, I halved the mixture and added green food colouring to one half (along with vanilla extract) and chocolate to the other. Not only are the colours appropriate, the flavour combo is delicious.
Chocolate and vanilla is a true classic. However, you are absolutely free to swap out the vanilla for a different flavour. For example, mint would work. As long as the flavour you choose works with chocolate, you’re good to go.
The way you distribute the two mousse halves into your serving containers is up to you. You don’t need to aim for a swirl or beautiful pattern. This mousse is Beetlejuice inspired! Get quirky with it.
To create the “dirt”, all you need is a pack of Oreo cookies to blitz into fine crumbs. My local supermarket even had the Halloween version which was exciting. Dust on the crumbs and finish with your gummy worms and chosen Halloween sweets.
Top Tips
- Any chocolate will work in the mousse, so long as you choose chocolate you like! Just remember to split the mousse into two before you add the chocolate so that you can make one half of the mousse green.
- Whilst I have written the recipe so that the green half of the mousse is vanilla flavour, this is entirely optional. Feel free to add a different flavour in its place. Anything that works with chocolate should be fine i.e. mint.
- The more you whip, the more air you’ll push into the mixture. You don’t need to spend ages on this part though, a good few minutes is plenty. Whip until the mixture can hold its shape and you’ll be good to go.
- Don’t feel like you need to create perfect patterns with your mousse when decantering it into your serving containers. Just be sure not to mix up the two halves to the point that you can’t differentiate the two colours!
These quirky Beetlejuice movie night mousses are seriously tasty and so fun to make. They don’t take much time or effort, making them the ideal movie night dessert to whip up in a jiffy. Get creative with your candy decorations – it makes the whole process even more fun. Enjoy!
Happy… whisking, happy baking!
The Recipe
Ingredients
Mousse:
- 600ml [2½ cups] double [heavy] cream
- ½ tin condensed milk
- 100g [3.5 oz] chocolate of your choice
- Vanilla extract
- Liquid green food colouring
Graveyard cups decoration:
- 100g [½ individual pack] Oreo cookies
- Gummy worms
- Halloween themed candy of your choice
Makes: 6 – 8 mousses
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Chilling time: 20 minutes until set
Method
Beetlejuice movie night mousses:
- In a heatproof bowl, melt the chocolate in 30 second bursts – stirring in between bursts – until melted. Leave to cool.
- In a large mixing bowl, add the double cream and condensed milk. Using an electric hand whisk, mix the two together until frothy. The mixture doesn’t need to hold its shape yet.
- Split the mixture in half so that you have two bowls of a (roughly) equal amount of mixture in each one.
- Add the green food colouring and vanilla extract to one half and whisk until it holds its shape and resembles a soft whipped cream texture.
- Add the cooled melted chocolate to the other half of the mixture. Whisk until it holds its shape and resembles a soft whipped cream texture.
- Spoon or pipe the two mousse mixtures into your chosen serving containers. Swirl with a sharp knife if desired, or leave in blobs of colour. The choice is yours!
- Use a cutlery knife to smooth over the surface and wipe round the edge of your containers if needed.
- Blitz your Oreos in a food processor, or smash them into crumbs inside a sandwich bag with a rolling pin. Sprinkle the crumbs over your mousses, creating a “dirt” layer.
- Finish by placing your gummy worms and chosen Halloween themed sweets in and on top of your Beetlejuice movie night mousses. Place in the fridge to set fully and keep refrigerated until ready to serve.
These creepily tasty Beetlejuice movie night graveyard mousses will last for up to 3 days in the fridge. They are super easy to whip up and do not need to be covered when sitting in the fridge. Enjoy!
The Film
When I told my (older) half-sister that I had recently watched Beetlejuice for the first time, she couldn’t believe it had taken me so long. She proceeded to remark about how this spooky movie was a childhood favourite of hers.
Honestly, I’m still not sure how I feel about that last part, but each to their own.
Released in 1988, Beetlejuice became the next addition to filmmaker Tim Burton’s collection of spooky and quirky cinematic creations.
After their untimely demise, married couple Adam and Barbara find themselves haunting their own house. When a new family moves in, they decide to take matters into their own ghostly hands.
But, after a few failed attempts at scaring out the new owners, they call upon the help of Beetlejuice; a rogue and malicious spirit who is more than happy to lend his services.
Story credits go to Michael McDowell and Larry Wilson, with McDowell and Warren Skaaren responsible for the screenplay.
With a cast like Catherine O’hara; Winona Ryder, Geena Davis, Michael Keeton, Alec Baldwin, Jeffrey Jones, Glenn Shadix and more, it’s no surprise Beetlejuice is still a fan favourite.
It’s a great Halloween movie night option, as stated in my Autumn movie bucket list!
