How To Make a Goofy Goober Sundae

SpongeBob fans far and wide know of the glorious and gallant goofy goober sundae. I bring you a recipe inspired by such a colourful dish so that you may make it yourself for your SpongeBob SquarePants movie night or themed party. Let’s get ice cream drunk.

The Bake

I discuss how iconic SpongeBob SquarePants is in my SpongeBob SquarePants celebration cake recipe. I couldn’t stop at one SpongeBob recipe, though, could I?

The humble goofy goober sundae a.k.a. The Triple Goofy Goober Sunrise Sundae is a character in its own right.

There are many goofy goober sundaes throughout The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, making it a recurring theme and arguably a voiceless character – yet still a driving force. The end song is inspired by the entire concept of a goofy goober, after all.

Let’s be real, SpongeBob and Patrick getting hammered on multiple triple goofy goober sunrise sundaes is both impressive and also a true mood.

To recreate this iconic goofy goober sundae, I referred to my trusty three-ingredient ice cream recipe to begin with.

Just like the one used in my Living inspired knickerbocker glories recipe. I know that I can’t really call this a bake as there is no actual baking involved, but we roll.

Ice cream made from scratch is unbeatable, so it’s a good thing no-churn ice cream recipes exist for those of us that don’t own ice cream makers! My go to ice cream recipe is also egg free, which means less ingredients and less effort.

What I love most is the customisable aspect. This same no-churn recipe is the base of the mint choc chip ice cream recipe that features in my Lilo & Stitch movie night menu. You can adapt and alter based on personal taste on top of being able to turn the same base into different types of ice cream.

The ice cream base of my goofy goober sundae is vanilla, making it a simple treat to whip up.

The slightly more difficult part is decorating it as fast – and as accurately – as you can before the ice cream melts. Particularly if you are making these sundaes during the warmer months.

It’s entirely achievable, it just means serving them one at a time. Unless you have the freezer space to build all of the sundaes you want and are happy for the fruit to be frozen, that is. Your choice entirely, friends.

I proceeded to build my goofy goober sundaes using homemade ice cream and then store bought ice cream to compare.

Unless you’re making these sundaes during winter time using the homemade ice cream recipe, the likelihood of them looking exactly like they do in the film is low. It melts incredibly fast when the weather is warm as there are no added stabilisers.

Whereas store bought ice cream has these added stabilisers to make it last longer. I usually make my own ice cream to avoid such chemicals, but sometimes you have to adjust when things like shape are important.

Whether you’re using homemade ice cream or store bought ice cream, don’t get hung up on the appearance of your sundaes. As long as you’ve got all of the elements, your ice cream treats can still be classed as goofy goober sundaes.

To decorate the sundaes, you need chocolate sauce; bananas (unlike the film, I thought it better to peel the bananas before adding them), cherries, chocolate colour candies and strawberry laces.

Sounds like a party in a glass, right?

You can be as specific or as easy-breezy with the decoration as you like.

For example, there are various types of chocolates that are coated in colour tinted sugar shells. Smarties is what I chose, but you could go with M’nM’s, or even something like Cadbury mini eggs if it’s the right time of year.

Whatever floats your ice cream boat.

If you can get the chocolate sauce that hardens on the ice cream, that’ll make building your triple goofy goober sunrise sundae much easier. Sure, the chocolate appears to be set only on the top of the ice cream in the movie, but as long as it’s on there, I’d say you’re golden.

In other words, don’t stress about being neat. If you focus too much on being super tidy, your ice cream could melt before you’ve finished building your sundaes!

Now, the goofy goober sundae in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is supersized.

Cartoon-style supersized. I have sized down the sundaes for this recipe because I’m just not entirely sure it’s humanly possible to eat a sundae of such magnitude at the same speed as SpongeBob and Patrick do before it completely melts.

I will say… if you’re willing and able, giving it a go is your prerogative, friends.

Top Tips

  • Honestly, whilst I usually advocate for making your own ice cream because it’s delicious, it’s far easier to build a triple goofy goober sunrise sundae using store bought ice cream due to the stabilisers they add in. For this reason, I recommend just buying vanilla ice cream from the shop. Just make sure it isn’t soft scoop!
  • If making the ice cream: you can whip up the ice cream mixture and make it nice and frothy, but it doesn’t need to hold its shape. You can achieve a delicious texture just by whipping it until it’s a little thicker. Be mindful that the more you whip, the more volume you will end up with, so the larger the container you will need to store it in!
  • Feel free to add a different flavouring than vanilla. Any extract like coconut or peppermint would be delicious. Alternatively, you can add the juice of a lemon and/or lime in place of the vanilla.
  • Homemade ice cream can be frozen in any freezer-suitable container. I like to use a bread loaf tin or deep cake tin.
  • Freezing the ice cream overnight is the preferable option, but your ice cream should be frozen after at least 5 hours in the freezer.
  • As there are no soft-serve chemicals in homemade ice cream, you’ll need to get the frozen ice cream out from the freezer and leave it for around 5 minutes before attempting to scoop.
  • Have your decorations prepared before you start scooping your ice cream into your chosen glasses/bowls. That way the least amount of melting can occur before your goofy goober sundaes are ready to be served!
  • Cocktail sticks are your best friend when it comes to securing the bananas and cherries to the ice cream.
  • Don’t get hung up on trying to make the sundaes look exactly like they do in the movie, especially when it comes to the facial features. Just have fun with it!

There you have it, friends. Follow the recipe below to find out how to make a goofy goober sundae, either using a no-churn ice cream recipe or store bought, and simple ingredients to decorate. You can make this ice cream treat as personal to you or as accurate to the The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie version as you like. Ice cream makes a great movie night snack, so what better way to eat some than to eat some that is entirely on theme? Enjoy!

Happy baking (sundae building), happy eating!

The Recipe

Ingredients

Goofy Goober Sundae ice cream:

  • Store bought vanilla ice cream

OR no-churn homemade ice cream:

  • 600ml [22.5 oz] double [heavy] cream
  • A 397g tin sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Decoration:

  • Chocolate topping sauce
  • 4 bananas (one per sundae)
  • 12 fresh or glace cherries
  • Chocolate candy i.e Smarties or M’n’Ms
  • Strawberry laces

Serves: up to 4 sundaes

Preparation time (if making the ice cream): 5 minutes

Freezing time (if making the ice cream): 5 + hours, preferably overnight

Decoration time: 10 minutes

Method

Goofy goober sundae ice cream:

  1. If making your own ice cream, follow the next steps.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk the cream and condensed milk together until thickened and a little frothy. Add the vanilla and whisk in briefly.
  3. Pour the mixture into your chosen freezer-suitable container(s) and freeze the mixture for at least 5 hours, preferably overnight.
  4. When the ice cream is frozen and you are ready to serve, retrieve the ice cream from the freezer and leave on the side to soften a little (around 5 minutes) before attempting to scoop.

Construction:

  1. Before serving your ice cream, prepare the ingredients used for your decorations. Peel and cut each banana into thirds. Do this enough times so that each sundae has three banana pieces each. Push a cocktail stick part way through the end of each one.
  2. Wash the cherries (if using fresh ones) and push a cocktail stick part way into each one. Cut the strawberry laces into mouth sized lengths. The length is your choice and they don’t need to be exactly the same.
  3. If going for pure accuracy, make sure to separate all of the pink, blue and green chocolate candies from the rest of the colours as these are the colours you will need. Otherwise feel free to use whatever colours you prefer.
  4. Scoop generous amounts of ice cream into an individual sundae glass or dish. Warm your spoon or ice cream scoop under hot water and dry off, if needed.
  5. Press the banana pieces into the ice cream: one on each side and one on the top if you can, using the cocktail sticks to help secure them. Add the cherries, using the cocktail sticks to secure them onto the banana pieces.
  6. Squeeze over the chocolate sauce. Press the blue and green chocolate candies onto the front of your sundae for the eyes, then a pink one for the nose.
  7. To finish, press a strawberry lace on in a slight curve to make a smiling mouth.
  8. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all of your servings are complete, serving each one immediately once built.

This colourful triple goofy goober sunrise sundae should ideally be consumed once built. Any leftover homemade ice cream can chill in the freezer and be consumed for up to 3 months. The best kind of movie night snack is one that makes you feel both satisfied and involved. This could also be a fun activity to carry out at a themed party. Enjoy!

The Film

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie was released in 2004, five years after the original series began airing.

In this feature length film, we find SpongeBob preparing for a promotion that he believes is coming his way. But, when Mr. Crabbs is accused of stealing King Neptune’s crown, SpongeBob and Patrick set out to recover the crown and save Mr. Crabbs from demise.

The film was directed by original series creator Stephen Hillenburg alongside Mike Osborne.

Hillenburg also co-wrote it with fellow writers Derek Drymon; Tim Hill, Kent Osborne, Paul Tibbitt and Aaron Springer.

All of the series cast regulars return for The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie to play their staple characters, as well as a few additional ones, too. They were joined by the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Jeffrey Tambor, Alec Baldwin, and more, all voicing new characters. David Hasselhoff even makes a human cameo as himself in the film.

SpongeBob SquarePants is both wholesome and cheeky at the same time.

This combo may not always work on paper, but it absolutely soars when animated in the form of a talking sponge and his friends.

I go into great detail about the show in my SpongeBob SquarePants celebration cake recipe (linked in the beginning of this post) and for good reason. It’s a globally popular cartoon!

Though the story in the movie is stand alone, it still feels like you would expect a SpongeBob story to. I love it and I know I’m not alone.

We’re all goofy goobers on some level, wouldn’t you say?
